Expert advice

"I install tile in Southern California, where terracotta is very popular, but what most people don’t realize is how absorbent it really is. If you apply sealer directly to untreated terracotta, the tile can absorb it unevenly and that’s when you start seeing blotchy finishes or areas that darken more than others.

Priming the surface first helps regulate how the tile absorbs liquids so the sealer can bond evenly. It makes a big difference in how consistent the finish looks and how well the tile holds up over time."

Medium strength cleaner

if you're looking for a super strong cleaner this is not it, this did a good job at cleaning all the light dirt but for the heavy stains I had to use a different product form the site.

FAQs

What is Ares' Terracotta Cleaner designed for?

Ares is a powerful, acidic detergent designed for post-installation cleaning of terracotta and other acid-resistant surfaces. It is formulated to remove cement residue, grime, and other stubborn deposits left behind after tile installation, without damaging the natural texture of the material.

What surfaces is Ares safe for?

Ares is suitable for terracotta and other acid-resistant surfaces, including ceramic tile. It should NOT be used on acid-sensitive materials such as marble, limestone, travertine, or polished concrete. Always conduct a preliminary test on a small, inconspicuous area before applying.

How do I dilute Ares for different surfaces?

Ares is a concentrate and the dilution depends on the material. For porous and absorbent materials like terracotta, dilute 1 part cleaner with 2 parts water. For compact, less absorbent materials like ceramic tile, dilute 1 part cleaner with 4 parts water.

How do I apply Ares?

Make sure the surface is clean and dry, and remove loose dust, dirt, or debris first. Apply the diluted solution using a scrubbing brush or a single-disc machine with a suitable pad. Allow the cleaner to sit for 10-15 minutes, scrubbing periodically with non-abrasive tools (white pads or soft brushes) to enhance cleaning and prevent damage. On highly absorbent surfaces, apply additional product during the process to ensure complete coverage. Once the cleaner has acted, add clean water to create an emulsion, spread evenly, and remove excess with a wet vacuum. Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all cleaner residue is gone. Repeat for heavily soiled areas if necessary. Let the surface dry completely before using or applying any sealant.

Does Ares offer long-term stain protection?

No. Ares is intended for deep, post-installation cleaning, not long-term protection. After cleaning, ensure all residue is removed before applying any sealants. For terracotta protection, follow with Demeter's Terracotta Primer and then Zeus' Tile Sealer.

What is the container size?

Ares is supplied in a 32 fl oz (950 mL) bottle. Because Ares is a concentrate diluted with water at 1:2 (terracotta) or 1:4 (ceramic), the actual usable solution volume is substantially larger.

Can I use Ares on already-sealed tile?

Ares is intended for cleaning unsealed, freshly installed acid-resistant tile, and being acid-based it can damage some existing sealers. Use it before sealing — and after using Ares, plan to seal the surface to provide long-term protection.

What safety precautions should I take when using Ares?

Ares is an acidic product. Use only in a well-ventilated area, ideally with local aspiration. Wear protective gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection as necessary to avoid inhalation, skin, and eye contact. Prevent the product from entering drains or waterways, as it can pose environmental risks. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling, and always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use.

Can I use Ares outdoors?

Yes. Ares is well-suited to outdoor terracotta and acid-resistant tile installations. Make sure to thoroughly rinse afterward, control runoff, and dispose of waste in accordance with local hazardous-waste regulations.

How do I clean my tools and store leftover product?

Clean all application tools with water immediately after use. Store Ares in its original sealed container in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, open flames, sparks, and other ignition points. Dispose of any unused product and its container in accordance with local regulations for hazardous waste.
