Expert advice

I install tile in Southern California, where terracotta is very popular, but what most people don’t realize is how absorbent it really is. If you apply sealer directly to untreated terracotta, the tile can absorb it unevenly and that’s when you start seeing blotchy finishes or areas that darken more than others.

Priming the surface first helps regulate how the tile absorbs liquids so the sealer can bond evenly. It makes a big difference in how consistent the finish looks and how well the tile holds up over time."

Medium strength cleaner

if you're looking for a super strong cleaner this is not it, this did a good job at cleaning all the light dirt but for the heavy stains I had to use a different product form the site.

FAQs

What does Demeter's Terracotta Primer do, and why is it needed?

Demeter is a deep-penetrating, water-repellent treatment formulated for terracotta and cotto tile. It absorbs deeply into the clay to create a moisture barrier, helping prevent damage from water and preparing the surface so that a sealer can bond and perform consistently. It is required as a preparation step before sealing — Demeter must be used together with a penetrating sealer (such as Zeus' Tile Sealer) to achieve complete protection. On its own, Demeter provides moisture and stain resistance but does not protect against etching from acidic substances or substitute for a full sealer.

What surfaces is Demeter designed for?

Demeter is specifically formulated for terracotta and cotto tile, including hard-burned clays and handmade clays. For cement tile or natural stone, use Poseidon's Tile Primer with Zeus' Tile Sealer instead.

How do I dilute and apply Demeter?

First, ensure the tile surface is clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, or debris. Demeter is a concentrate and is diluted with water based on the tile's absorbency: dilute 1 part primer with 3 parts water for low-absorbent materials (hard-burned clays), and 1 part primer with 1 part water for highly absorbent materials (handmade clays). Apply with a brush, roller, or low-pressure sprayer — or immerse each tile in the diluted primer for 15-20 seconds prior to installation. Allow it to penetrate for 15-20 minutes, reapply as needed on highly absorbent surfaces, and wipe away any excess to prevent residue.

How does Demeter fit into the terracotta installation workflow?

Apply Demeter BEFORE grouting to protect the tile from absorbing moisture and pigment during the grouting process. Wait at least 24 hours, then grout. After the grout has dried, clean the surface with Athena's Heavy Duty Tile Cleaner (or another heavy-duty cleaner) to remove any grout haze or residue. Then apply Zeus' Tile Sealer (or another compatible penetrating sealer) over the primed terracotta for complete, long-term protection.

What is the container size?

Demeter is supplied in a 32 fl oz (950 mL) bottle. Because Demeter is a concentrate that gets diluted with water at 1:3 or 1:1 ratios depending on tile absorbency, the actual usable solution volume is substantially larger.

How long does Demeter take to dry, and when is it fully cured?

The surface is ready for light traffic in 2-3 hours, with full protection achieved in 24 hours. Avoid water exposure for 24 hours after application, and wait at least 24 hours before grout application or tile installation.

What does Demeter protect against — and what doesn't it protect against?

Demeter provides moisture and stain resistance and helps preserve the natural look of terracotta. It does NOT protect against etching from acidic substances, and it is not a substitute for a sealer. For best long-term results, Demeter must be followed by a penetrating sealer such as Zeus' Tile Sealer, and spills should be cleaned promptly to maintain surface integrity.

Can I use Demeter outdoors?

Yes. Demeter is suitable for both interior and exterior terracotta installations — patios, walkways, pool surrounds, and exterior walls. Apply in a well-ventilated area and follow the same dry-time and water-exposure guidance as for indoor installations.

What safety precautions should I take when using Demeter?

Use in a well-ventilated area and use local aspiration where possible. Wear protective gloves, eye protection, and face protection; use a respirator if ventilation is limited. Keep Demeter away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources, and use non-sparking tools. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use.

How do I clean my tools and store leftover product?

Clean all tools with water immediately after use. Store Demeter in its original sealed container in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, open flames, sparks, and other ignition points.
